Responsible AI

The principles that govern how we build, evaluate and deploy autonomous and intelligent systems.

Overview

Responsible AI is how we keep capability aligned with accountability. As systems become more autonomous, the questions of transparency, fairness and control become engineering requirements rather than philosophical asides.

These principles apply across the lab and to the AI products in the broader Vestval ecosystem.

What this covers

Transparency

Systems explain what they did and why, at a level appropriate to the people affected by their decisions.

Accountability

There is always a responsible human owner for an autonomous system's behavior and outcomes.

Fairness

We test for and mitigate harmful bias, and we document the limits of where a system should be trusted.

Privacy by design

Data minimization and on-device processing are preferred wherever they are feasible.

Human oversight

Consequential decisions retain meaningful human review and the ability to intervene.

Continuous evaluation

Models and policies are monitored after deployment, not just validated before it.
